The government of Pakistan has recently launched the Ehsaas Rashan portal to increase the reach of its food assistance program to the country’s poor. This portal will be a hub for private sector organizations and government institutions to reach out to the food-deprived and disadvantaged. The Ehsaas Rashan program is a federal government initiative which aims to improve food security and alleviate hunger in Pakistan.
The program aims to provide relief to the poor by providing subsidized food items to people in the poorest regions. It is estimated that it will cost around Rs 120 billion to fund the program and will benefit more than 20 million poor families. This program will provide a 30% subsidy on the cost of wheat, sugar, and ghee to poor families. In total, 130 million people will be able to benefit from the Ehsaas Rashan Program.
The Ehsaas Rashan Program Pakistan has been launched in collaboration with the National Bank of Pakistan. It is expected to benefit 130 million people and will provide subsidized food to poor families every month. To avail the program, applicants must fill an application form. The registration period is expected to start on the first day of October 2022.
The program’s budget is 120 billion rupees, and participants receive a subsidy of 1000 rupees each month. This money is used to purchase food and household items like flour, oil, and pulses. Applicants may also register through the Digital Ehsaas Portal. Alternatively, they can register via SMS number 8171. The government will notify them of their eligibility after two weeks. The government is currently considering the possibility of shutting down the Ehsaas Rashan Program in Punjab, which was launched by the PML-N government last year. This decision follows the change of power from the PML-N government to the Punjab government. In its bid to reduce poverty in Punjab, the Finance Department of the province claims it has provided Rs. 9 billion to the Federal Government to implement the Rashan Program, but it is failing to provide subsidized food packages in the proportion of its contribution. In response, the Punjab government has introduced the Chief Minister’s Utility Support Program, which provides essential commodities at subsidized rates at utility stores throughout the province.
The Ehsaas Rashan Program will be available to families and Karyana shops across the Punjab province. Registration for the program will begin in October 2022. It will be open to all eligible families in the province of Punjab. A video explaining the program will be published by Senator Dr. Sania Nishtar shortly. To register, shopkeepers must purchase an unlocked mobile SIM and link it with their personal CNIC number. Once registered, they can proceed to the web-based registration portal. If they have registered for the program in the past, they do not need to register again.
